Below are the Emoji’s that I used for my story. This story features a gun, money, a cigarette, alcohol, and a man running. This story ties back to Gambino, my created character and showcases his lifestyle. He’s always packing heat and lives for the thrill of money and the rush of tobacco and alcohol. The last emoji of the guy running shows that Gambino is always on the move and making acquaintances.
To start I’ll go through the assignments I created this week.
- Radio Show Design – http://bchristiansen.com/blog/assignments/radio-show-design/
- This is the “Tune Squads” bumper sticker! It features a night sky background bringing out the Noir feel and then our name of the group, the members, and DS106 radio as well as Noir106. It simple but to me bumper stickers aren’t meant to have a lot going on.
- Music Mashup – http://bchristiansen.com/blog/assignments/music-mashup/
- This music mash features Close your Eyes by parmalee and This is how we roll by Florida Georgia Line. This assignment gave me a huge headache as sound cloud was not being cooperative. I would upload the creation and then it would disappear in 30 seconds. With assistance from Professor Groom he found the issue and I was back on my feet.
- Sounds of Gambino’s Day – http://bchristiansen.com/blog/assignments/sounds-of-gambinos-day/
- This is a combination of sound effects in a typical day for Gambino. I used Audacity to put them together and freesounds.org to download the clips. This clip shows the badass side of Gambino and his everyday eventful life.
- Your Theme Song – http://bchristiansen.com/blog/assignments/your-theme-song/
- This was my favorite assignment this week. I chose Livin’ Part of Life by one of my favorites; Eric Church. The lyrics perfectly describe who I am and I need to start “Livin life” more.
- Radio Bumper – http://bchristiansen.com/blog/assignments/radio-bumper/
- This was a creation that can be used for our upcoming show. It’s a very short clip featuring “Black Betty” by Ram Jam and myself saying “Thank you for listening to DS106 Radio” I am excited to see what my group members have created.
I completed the Radio Listen Along on Wednesday Night. Below are some of the tweets I had. This was a good listen along mainly because of the group of people that were interacting. I enjoyed it more than the first one for that reason and everyone had great comments.
The addition of the commenting assignment was a great idea. To be honest I haven’t been doing it nearly enough and obviously no one else has either. Through this week it was nice getting tips and love from others and it was cool to see how many people are creating such outstanding things. Below is linked to some of the things I commented on. People are doing great work!
Lastly I have linked to our Radio Show Progress.
To be completely honest the creation of a Radio Show is very daunting. I wasn’t sure where to start or even find group members. Luckily Professor Groom suggested Twitter and I found three people that were so kind to let me join their group. At first we had no clue what to do and Geoffry was brilliant and wrote up an idea that involves our assignment of the alternate endings. Were not totally sure of where it will exactly go but we are thinking about maybe tying all of our alternate endings together to make one giant one and broadcast it on the radio! We are working together to try to get schedules straight and see when everyone can get rolling. It’s hard working with 4 people and trying to line up schedules so that we can all meet. For one of my assignments I created a new Radio Bumper that could possibly be used in our show. I also created a bumper sticker that promotes the show. At this point I’m not sure of what the plan is on how we are going to convey our story over the air but we need to do some brainstorming. I am thinking that we are going to record our show in the Convergence center which will be fun.We are planning to meet up Monday night and get the “Tune Squad” rollin!
Looking forward to the second half of the Radio Show project!

Now that we have a #ds106 radio up and running creating a 15 to 30 second bumper for the station. What is a bumper? It is a short recording that identifies the radio station with signature music or an expression that makes sure the listeners know what they are tuned into (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bumper_(broadcasting)). So for ds106 it should certainly include “DS106 Radio” and some sort of message about the station with voice over music.
For my last assignment I created a Radio Bumper that could potentially be used for our upcoming show. I used the song “Black Betty” and cut the lyrics. My phrase was “Thank you for listening to DS106 radio”. Its short but I think its to the point and to me I think to much is just confusing and sounds bad.
I used Audacity for the creation. This is the second time I made a bumper so the process was much smoother and took half of the time that the first one did.
If you had the opportunity to create your own theme music, what would it sound like? Get creative and create your own sounds or select an instrumental from Youtube or any other source that represents you well. If you are going the youtube route, remember to use VidtoMp3. Once you have selected your background music, find some sounds/effects to incorporate into it using Audacity or other editing software. You can find free sounds at SoundBible. Once completed, upload to Soundcloud and share it with us.
For this assignment I was going to choose a song that fit my character but I chose to go with a tune that fits me. The song of choice was “Livin’ part of life” by Eric Chrurch. I know the assignment said to keep it to an instrumental but the lyrics are so perfect that I couldn’t cut them out. My favorite part of the song is “So tomorrow I’m takin me fishin, hang a sign on the door of my life, tell the world that Ive gone missin, An I wont be back for a while”
I converted the clip from youtube so that it could be uploaded to Audacity and then submitted the final copy to sound cloud. Enjoy!
Record different sounds throughout your day. It can be as long or as short as you’d like. When you finish, combine them into one long sound of your day! Upload it to SoundCloud
I decided to link this assignment to my created character as I thought it was one of the easier assignments to relate. I used a whole conglomeration of different sound effects and uploaded each sound to Audacity. With a little playing around i was able to set up each individual sound just right and you get a sense of what Gambino’s day had in store.
For the first sound I chose an alarm clock as Gambino is rolling out of bed. He then heads to the shower to get his day going. He fires up his car and is off to the poker games. Games are going great and everyone is talking and then gunshots are coming from every direction. You hear screams from the crowd and Gambino disappears.
A day in the life of old Gambino!
Using Audacity (or any other sound editing program) create an audio mashup with 2 very distinct songs. According to wikepedia these mashaps may fall under “fairuse”.
3 1/2 Stars!
For this assignment I looked towards Country music as there has been many stories about how similar so many songs are. For my first song I chose “Close your eyes” by Parmalee and the second song was “This is how we roll” by Florida Georgia Line. I found both selections on Youtube and converted the files to MP3 so that they could be uploaded to Audacity. Through working with audacity I found two sections that sounded most similar and the “mashing” began. I cut down each song so you all would hear was the most similar parts and then formed the two together. At first the transition into “This is how we roll” was awful and I had some trouble trying to figure out how to fix that. I went to the effects tab and implemented the “fade out” tool and am much happier with how it sounded. Through doing this assignment it was eye opening to think about how many songs are so similar. Audacity was a great software to complete this assignment. Below is linked to my upload!
For the Radio Show design i decided to create another bumper sticker. I created one once before and enjoyed it enough that i wanted to make another. The bumper sticker includes our group name and the members in the group with Noir nightscape as a background. I used GIMP to create the image which is becoming much easier to use.
The background was taken off of Google images and i found that the night theme with the blurry effect was perfect for the noir stereotype. I have linked below to my creation which can be found on Flickr. Enjoy and make sure you tune in to our upcoming show!
Week 5, the design of noir, was an interesting one. The actual assignments I loved, although this week was a struggle. I had so much going on with school and out of school and it was hell trying to work through this week.
To start I’ll go over the daily creates I did for the week.
Daily Create 1:
I have to say I’m not too proud of this creation. It was my first attempt at GIMP and to say the least I was lost! I chose super vision as my power as I thought it fit this photo pretty well. I wasn’t able to add many effects to the photo to “show” super vision but it is what it is.
Daily Create 2:
THIS WAS AWESOME! By far the best daily create there has been. There’s just something about old radio ads that gets me and this one was fantastic. I own a 1976 F100 and this old Ford ad was one of the coolest things I’ve ever heard. I converted the clip from YouTube and was able to upload the 45 second clip to sound cloud. I’ve listened to the Ad at least 10 times since uploading. Awesome daily create.
Daily Create 3:
Wasn’t a fan of the last daily create. As I said it has been hell all week and I had to wait til Sunday to do the 3rd daily create and was stuck with “Play with your food”. I used candy canes for earrings and uploaded the photo to Flickr. I tried to get creative but my kitchen was pretty empty!
Vignelli Canon: This was a curious read. Vignellis first points about semantics, syntactic, and pragmatic all brought up interesting points and to me the semantics or the meaning behind something is the core of all work. It’s essential for whatever it is you might be doing. My favorite quote of his about pragmatics was “We like Design to be beyond fashionable modes and temporary fads. We like Design to be as timeless as possible”…fashionable modes and temporary fads was a great way to word it.
He then looked at appropriateness, discipline, and ambiguity. All three were straightforward although vital to every piece of work. Part two Vignelli looked at the tangible aspects of creations and the importance’s of such things as paper size, texture, color, sequence, etc. You really don’t think about these things when looking at something but after reading what Vignelli said there is so much more to creations that what is expected. I found that his examples for each of his statements were spot on and helped grab a hold of what he was trying to get across. One of the most intriguing things I found about Vignellis work was his part on “White Space”. I am new to the term and before reading this I’ve never looked at something and thought of the importance of white space. He calls it the “protagonist” of the image and I could not agree more. In his conclusion Vignelli says “It is imperative to develop your own vocabulary of your own language – a language that attempts to be as objective as possible, knowing very well that even objectivity is subjective”…I found this very intriguing and inspiring and I hope that I can change my mindset to mirror this thought.
This was a great article and I learned a lot more than I had expected. I expected the article to be bland and somewhat boring but Vignelli did a great job of exploring every aspect of design and worded his ideas so that anyone would comprehend his thoughts. This was a great first step towards the start of design week!
Double Indemnity: To start the title of this film had me hooked. It screams noir and double indemnity is a genius title for this film. The film features an insurance salesman, his wife who wishes her husband were dead, and one other fellow who is a claim adjuster. From research this film was up for 7 academy awards although didn’t win a single one?!? It is also known as setting a standard for the noir category and the films that followed.
From a design standpoint this film is incredible. The opening scene of the film sets the stage not only for the rest of the film but films to follow. It opens at night, of course very gloomy and foggy and has a car violently driving through the streets creating a suspense factor and something full of danger. The film is full of dark interiors, the use of shadows, creepy mirrors, fog and awful weather creating danger, angles of filming that set it apart from other films and many scenes that are disoriented and confusing. Double indemnity fully embraces the use of space as almost every scene has shadows that fill the empty parts and other simple things like lighting that you wouldn’t normally see. I think the heavy use of shadows mirrors the use of flashbacks as if the creator of this film wanted to show two people in one scene.
“Create Your Own Wallpaper”
For this assignment I used a photo that was taken by my dad in Charleston South Carolina over the ocean. The shot captures a storm and a bolt of lightning hitting the water. To me this shot screams noir with the dark contrast and the “violent” strike of lightning. I used the burn tool as well as a couple other various tools to bring out the strike of lightning a little more and was happy with the outcome. I added the text and played around with the fonts a little bit and finally found one i was satisfied with.
“Gambino Bumper Sticker”
The bumper sticker i created includes a slogan “Business or nuthin”, a gun, scotch, and a roll of money. Three things that Gambino lives for. I used GIMP 2.0 to create this bumper sticker. I used the text tool for the slogan. Drew a line with the paint brush tool and figured out how to make a perfectly straight line and the photos i included i layered together so that it would look like one picture.
When i saw this assignment i knew i had to do it. Photoshopping someone where they don’t belong is always hilarious and i picked Professor Groom. I picked a scene from the godfather to throw him in and chose this scene because it also relates to my created character Gambino. Groom took the place of the “God Father” and is sitting with all of his men. I used two photos for this assignment. One was Groom off of Google, and the other was the God Father scene also off of Google. I used the laso tool on Groom and was able to take just his head. I merged the two together and it worked out perfectly. I also added text at the bottom to let everyone know who it is. Is Professor Groom Gambino?!
For this assignment I chose what i want to do later in life and that is open a guide service for redfish down in South Carolina. I used GIMP to create the product. Found an image of a Redfish on google that i used the laso tool on and cropped it for the business card. I added text to the image to let people know my name, what i offer, and my contact. I merged all of the layers together and my final product was created.
I used four images for this assignment. Image one was one crank bait looking at dominance, image two was two crank baits looking at proportion, image 3 was a tower of cans looking at unity, and image 4 was redskins themed looking at balance, more specifically symmetry.
My first image of the design blitz was taken of a crank bait fishing lure that i use to fish for bass. For this photo i looked at the concept of dominance. To me, this image says dominance with how magnified the crank bait is and it is the only aspect to the picture. I cropped out most of the original picture to magnify the crank bait and i think the black background with the white circular effect enhances the “dominance” effect.
Image 2 is also of two crank baits that I use for fishing. For this photo I focused on proportion. With the one crank bait on top of the other it is easy to see which is bigger and the angle that the photo is taken makes it easier to see which is the larger. Proportion is in a lot of photos and sometimes you don’t even realize it which i why i chose this concept as part of my design blitz.
Image 3 looks at unity. From the bottom to the top there is unity everywhere. Whether its color, shape of the can, alignment of the logo, anything you want to focus on there is unity up and down. I used an editing software on my phone to enhance the photo and this is my favorite of the design blitz. You can even see unity in the gaps between the cans which is something small that you don’t think about but just shows how much unity is in this image.
Image 4 focuses on balance. There’s many aspects of balance and this particular shot looks at symmetry. Although the helmets are different they are separated by the pennant creating a sense of symmetry with the helmets placed exactly the same. I am a huge Redskins fan and had to use this photo for balance.
All images of the design blitz were put through GIMP for either cropping, effects, or just general enhancing. GIMP is becoming very user friendly and a breeze to use. I took other photos this week that i though were going to be used although i didn’t think they fit the categories well enough to be published. All in all, a good assignment that gave a deeper insight to the elements of design.
